If you are looking for a Scottish castle as your wedding venue there are many to choose from, however few can rival Balgonie Castle for heritage, charm and authenticity. Situated a few miles to the east of Glenrothes, this 14th century tower has been painstakingly restored by the Laird of Balgonie over the last 25 years.
Brides and grooms choosing to marry at Balgonie Castle are following in the footsteps of the many illustrious names to have walked the grounds of Balgonie Castle over the centuries, including King James IV, Mary Queen of Scots and Rob Roy MacGregor. The castle fell into disrepair in the 19th century and, in common with many similar buildings at the time, the roof was removed to avoid paying tax on the building. After significant vandalism in the 1960’s the castle was sold to David Maxwell who began the restoration process before selling Balgonie to it’s present owner in 1985
Much of the restoration work has been carried out by the Laird and his son personally, including hand carving magnificent oak doors which are exact replicas of the originals and restoring murals and decorations, making this one of the most faithfully preserved castles in Scotland.
Wedding ceremonies of up to 58 people can be held in the great hall, with larger parties of up to 100 being accommodated in the Chapel. Lit only by candles, the Chapel is particularly atmospheric and romantic as the venue for your marriage. After the ceremony you and your guests can enjoy drinks and canapés in the castle or in the beautifully appointed courtyard. Having the enclosed courtyard means that it is always possible for your Balgonie Castle wedding photographer to find a great backdrop for your formal photographs regardless of the angle or position of the sun.
